La selección mexicana tuvo que venir de atrás para conseguir un triunfo histórico en el estadio de Wembley que lo llevará a la gran final, luego de derrotar 3-1 al combinado de Japón en la semifinales y, de este modo, aseguró su primera medalla en este deporte en Juegos Olímpicos.

Cuando se esperaba que el partido fuera abierto por la propuesta que habían mostrado ambos conjuntos, el primer tiempo resultó todo lo contrario, se volvió trabado en el mediocampo, con muy pocas opciones de gol, pero con más dominio del balón por parte de la escuadra mexicana.

Sin embargo, la primera llegada de peligro en un arco fue gol, la cual fue hasta el minuto 12 mediante un golazo del jugador del Borussia Monchengladbach alemán, Yuki Otsu, quien por el lado izquierdo sacó fuerte disparo de derecha, colocando el balón lejos del portero Jesús Corona.

México trató de reaccionar, pero fue hasta el '27 que Giovani se perdió el empate, después de quedarle un rebote a modo en el corazón del área; sin embargo, la escuadra azteca pudo igualar al 30' en un tiro de esquina por medio de un cabezazo de Marco Fabián, quien conectó un balón peinado de Jorge Enríquez.

En los minutos finales de la primera parte, ambos conjuntos se volvieron a neutralizar, por lo que la pizarra se mantuvo con la igualada a un gol.

Para la parte complementaria, Japón salió con mayor decisión y adelantó líneas, teniendo una llegada seria en los botines de Kensuke Nagai al 49'; sin embargo, México poco a poco empezó a equilibrar las acciones, pero lo único que pudo hilvanar al frente fue un disparo de Marco Fabián.

México empezó a tocar mejor el balón y luego de un disparo con mucho peligro de Peralta al 63', el mismo jugador aprovechó un error defensivo al siguiente minuto para meter un golazo desde la media luna, que entró en el ángulo superior derecho del portero Gonda.

La escuadra azteca le cedió toda la iniciativa al conjunto asiático; sin embargo, éste no pudo aprovechar su dominio territorial y conforme se empezó a ir el tiempo sus jugadores comenzaron a caer en imprecisiones, lo que facilitó el trabajo de los elementos mexicanos para sobrellevar las acciones.

En los minutos finales, la escuadra azteca culminó su obra en tiempo de compensación con su tercera anotación en los botines del recién ingresado Javier Cortés, quien entró por el lado derecho y con fuerte disparo venció al portero para sentenciar el partido a su favor.
