El conjunto de Estados Unidos venció dramáticamente en el último suspiro del segundo tiempo extra al representativo de Canadá 4-3 en el estadio de Old Trafford, con lo que de este modo avanzó a la gran final del futbol femenino de estos Juegos Olímpicos de Londres 2012.

Todo indicaba que el partido se iba a definir desde los once pasos al ir empatado 3-3; sin embargo, el conjunto de la barra y de las estrellas nunca dejó de pelear y en la última jugada del cotejo un cabezazo de la delantera Alex Morgan mandó el balón a las redes para sentenciar el partido.

El conjunto de Canadá desde el comienzo del juego sorprendió a las estadounidenses, pues rápidamente al minuto 22' se fue arriba en el marcador con la anotación de la atacante Christine Sinclair, lo cual no tuvo respuesta de la escuadra estadounidense en lo que restó del tiempo de la primera mitad.

Para el complemento, Estados Unidos logró empatar al 54' en los botines de Megan Rapinoe, pero el gusto les duró poco, ya que el 67' Canadá recuperó la ventaja nuevamente por conducto de Christine Sinclair, consiguiendo su segundo gol.

Pero ahora el gusto les duró poco a las canadienses, ya que Megan Rapinoe al 70 le dio a su equipo la igualada; sin embargo, las jugadores de la hoja de maple respondieron al 73' para recuperar la ventaja, siendo su mejor jugadora Christine Sinclair la que logró anotar, su tercera de la noche.

Pero faltando 10 minutos, Canadá cometió una desconcentración en su área grande que le costó un penal en contra, el cual no tuvo problemas para ejecutar Abby Wambach para sentenciar el empate en tiempo regular.

Para los tiempos extra, Estados Unidos fue el equipo que arriesgó más, pero fue hasta el último suspiro del segundo tiempo extra que pudo conseguir el gol de la diferencia por medio de Alex Morgan, para de este modo avanzar a la gran final, donde enfrentará a Japón en busca de la medalla de oro.
