Londres — La elasticidad de Caterine Ibargüen. El tesón de Juan Martín Del Potro. La determinación de Laura Sánchez.

Desde la fosa de arena del Estadio Olímpico, el césped de Wimbledon y el trampolín de la piscina del Centro Acuático, los tres se subieron el domingo al podio en los Juegos de Londres.

Batiéndose contra rivales europeas, Ibargüen ganó una medalla de plata en el salto triple, la segunda presea de Colombia en el atletismo en la historia de los juegos.

Sin complejos, Del Potro se encargó de meter a Argentina en el cuadro general con un bronce de enorme mérito al vencer al serbio Novak Djokovic, el número dos del mundo, por 7-5, 6-4. El tímido tenista de 1,98 metros no bajó los brazos tras sufrir una desgarradora derrota en las semifinales, con un interminable tercer set que se decantó 19-17 a favor de Roger Federer.

A la sombra de otras colegas, Sánchez remontó desde el sexto lugar y acabó tercera en el trampolín de tres metros para darle a México una tercera medalla en los clavados de estos juegos.

Aunque no fueron de oro, las preseas ganadas por los tres supieron a gloria.

"Esta medalla tiene sabor a oro", declaró Ibargüen, quien saltó 14,80 metros para asegurar su plata.

La kazaja Olga Rypakova, con 14,98 metros, se quedó con el oro y la ucraniana Olha Saladuha, obtuvo con el bronce con 14,79.

Del Potro, quien confesó que le costó dormir tras caer ante Federer el viernes, se mostró eufórico con su bronce, poniéndolo a la par del título del Abierto de Estados Unidos 2009, en cuya final venció al suizo que es considerado como el mejor tenista de todos los tiempos.

"Es un triunfo grande, no sé si histórico, pero va a quedar para siempre", afirmó Del Potro. "Particularmente difícil de contar cómo me recuperé de mi tristeza contra Federer y poder enfrentar a uno de los mejores del mundo".

Sánchez celebró su bronce con igual vehemencia.

"Esta medalla es un premio a mi esfuerzo, al nunca bajar los brazos y no dejar de soñar en que se podía lograr una medalla olímpica", dijo Sánchez, que en tiempos recientos se vio relegada a un segundo plano por Paola Espinosa.

La medalla de Sánchez fue la tercera para México en los clavados de Londres, donde antes ya ganaron plata las parejas de hombres (Germán Sánchez e Iván García) y mujeres (Espinosa y Alejandra Orozco) en plataforma de 10 metros.

Los podios de Ibargüen y Sánchez también sirvieron para aumentar las cosechas particulares de Colombia y México.

Con tres de plata y un bronce, Colombia ya igualó su mejor cosecha que se remontaba a Munich 1972. México acumula tres de plata y dos bronce, superando los totales de las dos ediciones previas y a uno de igualar la cuenta de seis en Sydney 2000.

Brasil sumó un bronce con sus navegantes Robert Scheidt y Bruno Prada en la regata de la categoría Finn.

Aunque es el país del continente con la mayor cantidad de podios en Londres, con siete, los resultados de Brasil se están quedando por debajo de sus expectativas. Cumplida la mitad de los juegos, el próximo anfitrión olímpico lleva siete preseas, una de oro, una de plata y cinco de bronce. Esto está bastante lejos de su meta de entre 15 y 20 medallas.

El dominicano Luguelín Santos ganó con autoridad su serie de semifinales en los 400. La final será el lunes, mismo día en el que su compatriota Félix Sánchez estará peleando por el oro en los 400 con vallas.

También el domingo, el chileno Tomás González quedó cuarto en la competencia de piso en la gimnasia artística y el seleccionado dominicano de vóleibol femenino se clasificó a los cuartos de final.
