Con facilidad, el escocés Andy Murray se impuso a Roger Federer en la final del tenis en los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres. Una victoria histórica y muy emotiva para toda Gran Bretaña, que desde hace 76 años no veía a ningún británico coronarse en el pasto del All England Club en Wimbledon.

Andy Murray fue muy superior al suizo que, sin duda anhelaba alzarse con la medalla de oro para completar su impresionante palmarés, pero que tendrá que conformarse con la plata.

El país anfitrión celebra en grande esta victoria, y hoy, el tenis Olímpico tiene un nuevo "Rey". Para Murray, que finalmente logra ganar un campeonato grande, tal vez éste sea el momento crítico para dar un gran despunte en su carrera. Hasta ayer, la serie de enfrentamientos entre Roger Federer y Andy Murray se encontraba igualada 8-8, pero con este triunfo, el escocés se convierte en el segundo tenista con estadísticas ganadoras sobre el suizo -el otro es, ni más ni menos que Rafael Nadal.

Este triunfo sobre Federer representa una especie de revancha consumada para Murray, quien hace apenas cuatro semanas cayó ante el helvético en la final del Grand Slam de Wimbledon.

A pesar de la aplastante derrota, Roger Federer se subió al podio Olímpico para recibir la medalla de plata, que representa su primera medalla en singles en unos Juegos Olímpicos. En la edición de Beijing 2008, Federer obtuvo la presea dorada en dobles, al lado de Stanislas Wawrinka.

Lo que ocurrió en el partido

PRIMER SET (6-2)

Ambos comenzaron agresivos, pero Andy Murray era mucho más certero. La estrategia de Roger Federer de subir a la red no estaba rindiendo los frutos que él esperaba. Además, uno de los grandes fantasmas en la carrera del suizo se hizo presente, y es que en muchas ocasiones se le ha visto generando múltiples oportunidades de quiebre que nunca llegan a concretarse. Aquí, desde el primer servicio del escocés, Roger se puso a puntos para rompimiento, pero simplemente dejó pasar todos sus chances. Con doble quiebre de servicio, Murray se impuso 6-2.

Hasta este momento, el mayor enemigo de Roger Federer había sido su impaciencia, tratando de subir siempre a la red pero dejando espacios abiertos para Murray, y rematando violentamente algunas bolas, estrellándolas en la red.

SEGUNDO SET (6-1)

El mejor punto del partido apareció en el primer game del segundo set, cuando al estar 0-40, al saque de Federer, se presentó un rally largo, con la pelota yendo y viniendo de esquina a esquina, ambos corriendo. Murray volvió a correr con suerte y con ayuda de la red, ganó el punto.

Luego, a su saque, Andy Murray cometió doble falta y le dio a Federer dos puntos para quiebre, pero con maestría sacó avante la situación. Roger empujó más y se volvió a poner en ventaja, pero Andy continuó subiendo su nivel. En este momento se hicieron más fuertes que nunca los gritos de aliento para Roger, porque la gente estaba esperando que en algún momento su magia se hiciera presente en la cancha. A pesar de generar seis oportunidades para quiebre en este game y de atacar al escocés con sus peligrosos cambios de velocidad, no supo aprovechar y Andy se puso al frente 3-0.

Andy corría por todas la pelotas, atacaba con fuerza, y en última instancia recurría a algún globo, que finalmente, surtía su efecto. Federer seguía sufriendo con su revés y con su derecha, y tampoco era efectivo con su saque. Vino su primera doble falta y el marcador se puso 4-0 a favor del británico.

Hasta aquí llevábamos 1 hora y 10 minutos de partido, y el Roger ganador no aparecía en la cancha. La situación era ya alarmante para Roger y muy esperanzadora para Murray, quien veía cómo su tenis seguía fuerte y estable, y se sentía cada vez más cerca del oro. Sin respuesta del suizo, el marcador ya era 5-0.

El partido no era lo que se esperaba, no era un encuentro reñido. Roger sacaba ocasionalmente buenos tiros, pero no era ni la mitad del jugador que habíamos visto enfrentarse a Juan Martín del Potro en la semifinal del viernes.

Sacando para set, Murray se atrevió a lanzarse y rodar por el pasto, para intentar salvar un tiro cruzado de Roger, pero aún así, el suizo generó una nueva oportunidad de quiebre. El gusto le duró poco porque Andy logró ponerse a punto para set y lo finiquitó con un muy buen primer saque.

TERCER SET (6-4)

Roger ganó contundentemente su primer juego saque, y sin dar oportunidad para peloteo, también ganó su segundo juego de saque de manera impecable.

Pero nada mermaba la confianza de Murray y luego de ir 2-2, volvía a generar una oportunidad de quiebre a su favor. Con un revés cruzado que Roger ya no pudo levantar y dejó en la red, se dio el rompimiento otra vez. Esa ligera ventaja bastó para echarse en el bolsillo el set definitivo, porque el suizo ya no pudo nunca levantarse.
