LONDRES (AP) — La hemeroteca del olimpismo recodará al dominicano Luguelín Santos como el hombre que ganó la primera carrera en la que participaba un atleta con las dos piernas amputadas: Oscar Pistorius.

Santos se impuso el sábado en la primera ronda de los 400 metros planos con un tiempo de 45.04 segundos, el mejor de las siete series disputadas. El sudafricano Pistorius lo acompañó a la siguiente ronda como segundo clasificado tras cronometrar 45.44.

"Ha sido algo excelente", admitió Santos. "Admiro mucho a Pistorius, su fuerza al correr sin extremidades".

En un estadio olímpico abarrotado hasta la bandera, Pistorius, que corre con prótesis de fibra de carbono, demostró que vino a Londres a pelear con los mejores.

"He trabajado seis años para tener esta oportunidad", aseguró Pistorius, quien fue presentado por la megafonía del estadio como "Blade runner". "Se me escapó una sonrisa cuando estaba en los tacos de salida".

Y Santos se mostró feliz de haber escrito parte de esa pequeña gran historia que protagoniza el sudafricano.

"Me alegró mucho que quedó segundo. Es muy importante para el deporte", añadió.

Santos, de 19 años, dijo estar satisfecho con su debut en los Juegos y en la prueba. Y espera dar más de sí mismo para avanzar a las rondas finales.

El joven dominicano tiene una mejor marca personal de esta misma temporada en 44.45 segundos.

"La carrera hay ido excelente, como estaba previsto", comentó. "Espero mejorar todavía más la marca y pasar más rondas".

La retirada por lesión del campeón del mundo, el estadounidense LaShawn Merritt, incrementó sus opciones. Merritt, que arrastraba un lesión muscular en la pierna izquierda, abandonó su serie a los 200 metros con evidentes molestias.
