Estados Unidos logro el uno - dos en los 200 metros combinados gracias al triunfo de Michael Phelps y Ryan Lochte. Con esta hazaña, el llamado 'Tiburón de Baltimore' logra su medalla número 20 y se convierte en el hombre con más preseas olímpicas ganadas en la historia.

El estadounidense ha ganado un total de 20 medallas olímpicas en su carrera, más de las que ningún otro deportista olímpico hasta la fecha. Hasta este 2 de agosto de 2012, Phelps ha batido 37 récords mundiales en natación.

En total, Phelps ha ganado 19 medallas olímpicas: seis oros y dos bronces en los Juegos Olímpicos de Atenas 2004, ocho oros en los Juegos Olímpicos de Pekín 2008, y dos medallas de plata y una de oro en Londres 2012.

De esta manera, Phelps ha igualado por dos veces el récord de conseguir ocho medallas de cualquier tipo en unos JJ.OO. (Recordando que la natación es el deporte con más medallas disponibles que cualquier otro deporte), conseguido por el gimnasta soviético Alexander Dityatin en los Juegos Olímpicos de Moscú 1980. El 31 de julio de 2012, Phelps superó en número de medallas obtenidas a la gimnasta Larissa Latynina, quien consiguió un total de 18 en toda su carrera, siendo nueve de ellas de oro.

Gracias a sus títulos internacionales, y a sus récords batidos, Phelps ha sido galardonado con el premio World Swimmer of the Year Award (galardón al nadador del año), en 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, y 2009. También ha conseguido el galardón American Swimmer of the Year Award (galardón al mejor nadador americano) en 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, y 2009. En mayo de 2012, anunció su retirada de las competiciones de alto rendimiento, efectivo al terminar su participación en los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres 2012.

Sus principales motivos son el cansancio y fatiga por años de entrenamiento; aunque admitió también que cuando fue sorprendido fumando marihuana, pensó en retirarse de la natación por motivos de depresión.
