La selección mexicana de futbol consiguió su pase a los cuartos de final de los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres al vencer por la mínima diferencia al combinado de Suiza en el Millennium Stadium, de Cardiff, en la ciudad de Gales.
A pesar de que el combinado azteca ofreció un primer tiempo bastante flojo, luego de cederle toda la iniciativa al cuadro europeo, los pupilos del entrenador Luis Fernando Tena lograron recomponer para la parte complementaria el camino.
El cuadro helvético tuvo todo para cambiarle la historia al partido desde la primera parte, pues el conjunto verde fue dominado casi de principio a fin, pero la escuadra suiza falló, pues no obstante de tener todo el tiempo el balón, sus jugadores carecieron de idea para poder abrir el marco del portero José de Jesús Corona.
México cuando por fin se decidió a atacar al equipo europeo, lo hizo al término de la primera mitad en los botines del internacional Giovani dos Santos, quien en dos ocasiones estuvo cerca de mandar a su cuadro 'injustamente' al descanso con la ventaja.
La disposición del cuadro azteca cambió por completo para el segundo tiempo, incluso en los primeros minutos Oribe Peralta se perdió el gol que pudo haberle dado tranquilidad a su escuadra para sobrellevar el cotejo, pero el delantero mexicano decidió erróneamente al final.
México conforme pasó el tiempo siguió siendo mejor y al minuto 68 pudo plasmar su dominio en la cancha, luego de que Peralta tuvo su 'revancha' al ganar la pelota entre varios defensas en el área grande, le hizo túnel al zaguero Affolter y definió con potente disparo.
Suiza al final quiso, pero ante el buen futbol de los mexicanos se quedó sin argumentos para siquiera ir por el empate, por lo que el partido quedó sentenciado para México, que con esta victoria pasó como primer lugar de su grupo.
