La situación de la judoca Wojdan Shaherkani, quien sería la primera mujer saudí en competir en los Juegos Olímpicos, sigue sin definirse ante la negativa de su padre a dejarla participar en la categoría de +78 kilogramos sin el hiyab.

En días pasados la Federación Internacional de Judo declaró que se debía mantener el espíritu y los principios de este deporte, por lo que no se le permitiría a la atleta de Arabia Saudita competir con su hiyab.

Este domingo el diario saudita "Al-Watan" publicó declaraciones de Ali Shaherkani, padre de la deportista de 16 años, en las que aseguró que su hija "no competirá en los Juegos si el Comité insiste en que no lleve hiyab (velo negro con que las mujeres islámicas se cubren el rostro)".

Debido a esta polémica, funcionarios olímpicos y de Arabia Saudita, quienes defienden que se debe obedecer el código de vestimenta islámico, han sostenido algunas reuniones para darle solución al problema.

Cabe recordar que Wojdan Shaherkani, junto a la velocista Sarah Attar (800 metros), se convirtieron en las primeras mujeres árabes en calificar a unos Juegos Olímpicos, para el país el deporte va en contra de la naturaleza de la mujer.

El debut de Shaherkani, quien compite en la misma división que la mexicana Vanessa Zambotti (+78kg), está programado para el viernes 3 de agosto próximo, ante la puertorriqueña Melissa Mojica.
