LONDRES (AP) — La venezolana Jessica López y la guatemalteca Ana Sofía Gómez se convirtieron el domingo en las mejores latinoamericanas en la gimnasia artística de los Juegos Olímpicos, al avanzar a finales junto a la dominicana Yamilet Peña.

Tanto López como Gómez sellaron sus boletos para entrar al selecto grupo de 24 atletas que el jueves disputarán la final en el concurso individual, que incluye las cuatro modalidades de la gimnasia artística: barras asimétricas, viga de equilibrio, salto en potro y piso.

Por su parte, la dominicana Peña fue la quinta mejor en salto con potro, con 14.933 puntos. La final del aparato se realizará el 5 de agosto.

En total participaron 13 gimnastas latinoamericanas en las justas del domingo.

La colombiana Jessica Gil, la argentina Valeria Pereyra, la puertorriqueña Lorena Quiñones, la mexicana Elsa García y la chilena Simona Castro se despidieron. Otras cinco brasileñas quedaron fuera.

López, de 26 años, terminó 13ra. Gómez, de 16 años, alcanzó el puesto 16, suficiente para entrar a la final del concurso individual, al que entran las 24 mejores.

En las finales de modalidades individuales clasifican los ocho mejores puntajes con un límite de dos atletas por país.

Brasil, que llegó con algunas veteranas de olimpiadas pasadas en sus filas, tuvo una actuación para el olvido y fue eliminada tanto por equipo como a nivel individual en todas las modalidades.

El jueves, López y Gómez deberán enfrentarse con las mejores gimnastas del mundo como la rusa Victoria Komova, mejor clasificada el domingo, la estadounidense Alexandra Raisman, segunda mejor, y la china Linlin Deng, que concluyó el domingo en la sexta posición.

López, debutante olímpica, sorprendió al inicio de la fase clasificatoria al situarse como la mejor en una de las cinco subdivisiones.

"Todo deportista tiene el sueño de ganar una olimpiada, hemos trabajado bastante fuerte para llegar a este nivel", comentó Gómez.

La presencia de la guatemalteca en Londres marcó un hito para el deporte de Guatemala, que participa en gimnasia artística por primera vez desde 1992, cuando Luisa Fernanda Portocarrero representó al país en los Juegos de Barcelona.

Por su parte, López, quien participa en su segunda olimpiada después de Beijing 2008, estaba confiada en que clasificaría en la modalidad colectiva.

"Estoy bastante satisfecha", comentó López tras su participación.
