Con dos goles de Giovani dos Santos, la selección de México logró su primera victoria en estos Juegos Olímpicos de Londres, luego de vencer en el estadio Ricoh Arena, en Conventry, Inglaterra, a su similar de Gabón 2-0, y, de esta manera, meterse de lleno a la pelea de su grupo en busca de uno de los dos boletos para clasificar a la siguiente ronda.

EL JUEGO
Desde el inicio del partido el conjunto mexicano se fue con más idea al frente, por lo que rápidamente generó asomos de peligro que no pudieron concretar ni Marco Fabián ni Oribe Peralta en los primeros 10 minutos.

Poco a poco los gaboneses empezaron a desdoblar sus líneas gracias a su velocidad; sin embargo, su primera oportunidad clara la pudieron generar hasta el minuto 16, luego de que N´Doumbou no pudo alcanzar un buen centro de Obiang, el cual pudo haber terminado en gol.

Tanto la escuadra mexicana como la gabonesa trataron de hacerse de la pelota, pero ambos cuadros se neutralizaron y no pudieron llegar cómodos en el área rival, lo más cercano que pudieron hilvanar fue un cabezazo de Peralta, al 30', y un disparo de Meye, al 31', en la que los dos porteros evitaron la caída de su marco.

Al final de los primeros 45 minutos, el conjunto azteca pudo haberse ido al descanso con la ventaja, luego de que su delantero Oribe Peralta no pudo concretar con la cabeza un servicio que lo dejó solo frente al marco, ya que lo direccionó por un lado.

Para la parte complementaria, México se fue con todo en busca del primer gol del partido, por lo que ofreció dos serios avisos de peligro por medio de Peralta y Javier Aquino; sin embargo, el portero gabonés Ovono se erigió como la figura de su escuadra, pues con buenos lances salvó su meta.

Pero por fin tanta presión mexicana tuvo sus dividendos al minuto 62, luego de un error de la zaga enemiga, que dejó botar la pelota en tres cuartos de cancha, Oribe controló en la media luna y cedió para Giovani dos Santos, quien entró al área y sacó disparo de zurda para vencer a Ovono.

El gol despertó al conjunto africano, pues por fin se decidió a atacar y echó por completo en su terreno de juego al cuadro mexicano, por lo que rápidamente llegó al área en los botines de Aubameyang, quien perdonó una oportunidad clara frente al portero José de Jesús Corona.

En los minutos finales, Gabón se volvió a perder la igualada al 85' por medio de Nono; sin embargo, en un descuido defensivo, Ndong le cometió penal a Peralta por zancadillarlo dentro del área, donde el jugador africano se fue expulsado por doble tarjeta amarilla. Giovani dos Santos colocó a su izquierda su disparo para anotar y, de este modo, sentenciar el partido.
