LONDRES .- La guatemalteca Ana Sofía Gómez alcanzó el domingo la mejor nota combinada de su grupo en la fase clasificatoria de la gimnasia artística en los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres.

Debutante en una olimpiada, la guatemalteca de 16 años alcanzó 56.132 puntos en el potro, piso, viga de equilibrio y barras asimétricas.

"Todo deportista tiene el sueño de ganar una olimpiada, hemos trabajado bastante fuerte para llegar a este nivel", comentó Gómez a periodistas después de la prueba.

Su presencia en Londres marca un hito para el deporte de Guatemala, que participa en gimnasia artística por primera vez desde 1992, cuando Luisa Fernanda Portocarrero representó al país en los Juegos de Barcelona.

Del total de 17 atletas que participaron en la primera subdivisión de la gimnasia artística femenina, Gómez tuvo el puntaje más alto entre las que actuaron en las cuatro modalidades, aunque ella sintió que su participación en la viga y el suelo fueron las mejores y en las que tiene más opciones de disputar la primera medalla guatemalteca en unos Juegos Olímpicos.

"Fueron las (modalidades) que me dieron mejores notas, creo que son las que tengo más posibilidades de llegar a la final", aseveró Gómez. "En la barra me dieron más nota de lo que esperaba", con 14.333 puntos.

También alcanzó 14.533 puntos en salto con potro, 14.000 en suelo y 13.266 en las asimétricas, con lo cual acumuló 2.434 puntos por encima de la segunda clasificada de su subdivisión, la belga Gaelle Mys, que acumuló 53.698 puntos.

En los Juegos Panamericanos de Guadalajara en 2011, Gómez alcanzó el oro en viga de equilibrio y plata en el concurso individual, que combina las cuatro modalidades.


El renacer de la gimnasia en el país centroamericano tiene que ver con la presencia de la pareja de entrenadores rumanos Adrian y Elena Boboc, quienes preparan a Gómez.


"Tenemos ocho años de estar juntos (con Adrian Boboc). El es rumano y junto a su esposa han ayudado a que la gimnasia guatemaltea estuviera en los Juegos Olímpicos después de 20 años", contó Gómez.


Su relación con el entrenador se hizo evidente por la comunicación constante que mostraron a lo largo de las pruebas de Gómez, quien conmemoraba con él al final de cada prueba.
