LONDRES (AP) — José Ramírez inició en el boxeo a los ocho años por prescripción paterna. Su progenitor, harto de ver a su hiperactivo hijo correr de un lado para otro, decidió inscribirlo en un gimnasio para que el chico quemara energías durante los 12 meses del año.

Y el pequeño José, que antes se divertía dando patadas a un balón, se aficionó en seguida a darle puñetazos al saco. Ramírez, quien reside en la ciudad californiana de Avelan, descubrió el boxeo gracias a su padre pero heredó el gusto por el fútbol de su abuelo, oriundo del estado mexicano de Michoacán, así como la devoción por el equipo Chivas de Guadalajara.

"Jugaba bien, de medio central", recuerda. Hoy, también es hincha del Barcelona del argentino Lionel Messi.

Las raíces mexicanas calan hondo en el joven de 19 años, quien regresa a menudo a Mexicali, la tierra de sus padres en la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos. Pero Ramírez dio el domingo el tercer triunfo en boxeo a Estados Unidos en los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres cuando derrotó al francés Rachid Azzedine por un apretado 21-20 en la categoría del peso ligero.

Con las victorias previas de Joseph Díaz y Terrell Guasha en la jornada del sábado, y Errol Spence el domingo, Estados Unidos se mantiene invicto en la competición olímpica, a la que Ramírez llegó como mejor boxeador amateur del país, habiendo fulminado récords que pertenecieron a grandes del pugilismo como Shane Mosley, Floyd Mayweather y Oscar De La Hoya.

Calzado en unos llamativos botines coloreados en amarillo fosforescente, Ramírez dio muestras de su buena técnica, explosividad e inteligencia ante un rival más experimentado como el francés y luego exhibió su excelente humor.

"Me agradan, llaman la atención y, si te sientes bien y a gusto, boxeas mejor. Además, se parecen un poco al oro", dijo sobre sus botines y en alusión al color de la medalla que espera conseguir en Londres.

Ciertamente, el estadounidense sigue siendo un chico activo y dinámico que tiene su propia página en Internet y hasta hace bien poco combinaba diariamente sus entrenamientos de boxeo con los estudios en la universidad de Fresno State, e incluso un trabajo a tiempo parcial en una cafetería de la franquicia Starbucks.

"Ahora ya no trabajo en la cafetería, pero ando en segundo año de carrera de Administración de Empresas", explicó en español tras atender en perfecto inglés a la prensa local.

Dejar los estudios nunca fue una opción para el prometedor púgil que, pase lo que pase en Londres, abandonará el amateurismo para dar el salto a profesional al concluir los Juegos.

"Le prometí a mi papá que me licenciaría antes de acabar como boxeador y pienso cumplirlo. Quiero tener opciones cuando cuelgue los guantes. Siempre fui bueno con los números, saqué buenas notas y la carrera me gusta mucho", relató.

De carácter cariñoso y accesible, fuera del ring busca la cercanía de uno de sus dos hermanos y su padre, desplazados a Londres para apoyarle. "No tengo novia. Las chicas pueden esperar por ahora. Lo importante es progresar como boxeador", afirmó.

Sobre el cuadrilátero, sigue atentamente los consejos de su veterano entrenador, Armando Macinas, quien también es su padrino, y asegura luchar por algo más que la bandera de las barras y estrellas.

"Tuve la oportunidad de pelear por México, pero elegí Estados Unidos, porque pensé que así llegaría a más gente. Cuando peleo, lo hago por los estadounidenses y mexicanos, que también me apoyan mucho. Mi sueño es hacer feliz al mayor número de gente posible", confesó.
