En la primera ronda de boxeo olímpico de Londres 2012, el mexicano Oscar Valdez consiguió mejorar su primera participación en una justa veraniega al pasar a la segunda ronda.

El nativo de Nogales, Sonora, venció al hindú Shiva Thapa por 14 puntos a 9.

El mexicano arrancó con fuerza en el primer round y a pesar de tener desventaja en la estatura y alcance logró imponer sus mejores golpes para abrir las tarjetas con un 4 a 2.

Sabiendo su posición en las tarjetas Thapa - el miembro más joven de la delegación hindú, con apenas 18 años de edad - salió a presionar en el segundo episodio y usando el contragolpeo y un boxeo rápido de piernas logró aventajar en la puntuación para ganar el segundo episodio y quedar a tan sólo un punto de Valdez.

Al campanazo del tercer asalto, el mexicano salió a demostrar la experiencia acumulada como boxeador amateur, con más de 200 peleas, y presionó al oriental hasta lograr dejarlo en las cuerdas y conectarlo a placer. El sonorense de 21 años de edad terminó el episodio conectando a Thapa una seguidilla de golpes con la que nada pudo hacer.

Oscar Valdez se impuso en el tercer round 7 a 3, para tener un global de 14 a 9.

Con esta victoria Oscar pasó a dieciseisavos de final y enfrentará a Anvar Yunosov de Tayikistan.
