La selección mexicana comenzó su participación en los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres 2012 con un afortunado empate 0-0 ante Corea del Sur, en partido disputado en Newcastle, Inglaterra.

Pese a su amplio favoritismo, México mostró muchas dudas ante un equipo asiático muy ordenado que le dominó por completo durante toda la primera mitad. Para la segunda parte los de Luis Fernando Tena equilibraron el trámite y tuvieron oportunidades de gol, que no fueron aprovechadas.

El choque comenzó con dos equipos llenos de nerviosismo, hasta que por el minuto 20 el agobio de los coreanos era incesante. La dificultad para salir jugando de Mier y Reyes causaron que Corea recuperara el balón siempre en territorio mexicano y llevara peligro a la portería de Jesús Corona, aunque no hubo contundencia.

Los primeros minutos del segundo tiempo fueron una pesadilla azteca. Park estrelló un balón en el poste y el desconcierto mexicano era total.

El ingreso de Giovani Dos Santos y Raúl Jiménez le cambiaron la cara al 'Tri' en la parte final del encuentro. Tres oportunidades claras de gol se desvanecieron en sus botines y en los de Marco Fabián, por lo que se concretó el empate que les da un punto.
