Monterrey, México.-Tantas expectativas se habían generado alrededor de este partido, que tanto Monterrey como América aburrieron en su juego de presentación en el Torneo Apertura 2012, luego de empatar sin goles en el estadio Tecnológico.
Desde el primer tiempo ambos conjuntos salieron cautelosos, sobe todo el Monterrey, pues le dejó al América tener más tiempo el balón, que solo tuvo algunos asomos a la meta del portero Jonathan Orozco, siendo un disparo en tiro de libre de Daniel Montenegro lo más peligroso, que hizo que el meta se empleara a fondo para evitar la caída de su marco.
Sin embargo, la escuadra local poco a poco le fue quitando la pelota al rival, siendo Walter Ayoví y Ángel Reyna sus motores; sin embargo, la zaga americanista se empleó a fondo y el joven arquero se mostró seguro en la portería ante los pocos embates regiomontanos.
Pero la más clara del encuentro estuvo del lado del conjunto rayado al minuto 39 en una gran jugada del chileno Humberto Suazo, quien en una gran pared dentro del área grande quedó solo frente al portero, sacó su escopetazo y éste se fue a estrellar en el poste del portero González.
Después del descanso, ambas escuadras salieron abiertas y se fueron en busca de ponerle número a la pizarra, siendo América el equipo, por medio del contrataque, el que se dejaba ver con más peligro, pero Orozco logró romper todo arribo azulcrema.
El partido se fue cayendo y ambos equipos se empezaron a quedar sin ideas, por lo que ambos entrenadores comenzaron a mover sus piezas para buscar darle otra cara a sus ofensivas, sobre todo el cuadro regio, que continuó desincronizado en el ataque.
Los cambios le funcionaron mejor al cuadro de Monterrey, que echó en su terreno de juego a los americanistas, pero siguió careciendo de ideas para poder hacer daño, por lo que el tiempo se fue consumiendo hasta el silbatazo final, quedando a deber un partido del que se esperaba más.
