Esto hubiese sido tan fácil en febrero. Jeremy Lin le tuteaba a Kobe Bryant tanto en la cancha como en la venta de camisetas. Todo durante un periodo alucinante que el comisionado David Stern describió como "algo incomparable".

De ninguna forma los Knicks de Nueva York dejarían ir a Lin en ese entonces, cuando era el tema de conversación en la NBA.

Las cosas son distintas ahora.

Lin ya no juega para un entrenador cuya ofensiva parece diseñada para él. Viene de una cirugía de rodilla y representaría un enorme costo —gracias a un contrato de los Rockets de Houston que firmó— incluso para uno de los más ricos equipos de la liga.

Lo que en su momento habría sido una fácil respuesta ahora genera muchas dudas.

La última pregunta debería ser la más fácil de responder, pero al tratarse de los Knicks, no exactamente. Los equipos tienen tres días para equiparar una oferta para sus agentes libres sin restricciones, por lo que los Rockets creen que el plazo vencerá a las 11.59 de la noche del martes, hora de Nueva York.

Excepto que los Knicks nunca confirmaron haber recibido la propuesta de los Rockets el sábado, por lo que es posible que tengan en mente otra fecha límite, lo que podría incluso generar un tipo de disputa o queja.

El contrato es por tres años y cerca de 25 millones de dólares, una enorme cantidad para alguien que ha sido titular en 25 partidos. Tras pagarle a Lin aproximadamente 5 millones de dólares anuales en las primeras dos temporadas, la cifra se dispara a casi 15 millones en el último año. A los Knicks, sin embargo, les saldrá más del doble de eso en pagos de impuestos por rebasar el tope de salarios.

Las condiciones de la oferta original que Lin había aceptado son de cuatro temporadas y cerca de 28 millones de dólares, lo que genera la duda de que él pidió a los Rockets una oferta que sería difícil de igualar por los Knicks.

Algunos aficionados desean que el equipo lo haga. Más de 5.000 personas firmaron una petición en el sitio de internet Change.org en la que piden que los Knicks retengan al jugador. Ejecutivos del equipo, que han dicho varias veces que intentan retener a Lin antes de que firmara la oferta, ahora se niegan a revelar sus planes.
