La selección española de fútbol se encuentra lista para disputar este domingo la final de la Eurocopa 2012 con el reto, no sólo de vencer a Italia, también de convertirse en la primera selección en el mundo en ganar tres torneos grandes (como grandes se considerarían a los mundiales, las Eurocopas y las Copas América) de forma consecuctiva, lograr un 'triplete dorado'.

Hasta ahora, ninguna selección ha logrado el referido triplete, como muchos sitios en Internet, entre ellos el diario español As ha señalado, al que aspirará este domingo 'La Roja', escuadra que ha ganado la Eurocopa del 2008 y el Mundial de Sudáfrica 2010 al vencer a Holanda.

Entre los referentes de equipos que han estado cerca de lograr esa hazaña están Alemania, en 1976, pero perdió la edición de la Eurocopa disputada en Yugoslavia, en la serie de penales ante Checoslovaquia. Antes, los 'teutones', como se les conoce, habían ganado la Eurocopa de 1972 en Bélgica y el Mundial del 1974 disputado en su país.

Francia también estuvo cerca, al hacer doblete con el Mundial del 98 y la Eurocopa de 2000, pero años más tarde fracasó al caer en la primera ronda del Mundial de Corea y Japón en 2002.

En América, el único equipo en lograr dos torneos grandes de forma consecutiva ha sido Brasil. Los 'verdeamarella, como se les conoce, venció en la Copa América de 2004, celebrada en Perú, tras ganar el Mundial de 2002. No obstante, caería en cuartos del Mundial de 2006 celebrado en tierras germanas.

En un artículo publicado por el diario Marca de España señala que la selección de este país obtuvo el triunfo en las ediciones de la Eurocopa de 1964 y 2008 y está empatada en el segundo puesto de la clasificación histórica con Francia, que venció en 1984 y 2000. Los alemanes tienen tres títulos, en 1972, 1980, 1996 y han disputado otras tres finales sin lograr el ansiado triunfo, como ocurriera en el mundial de Sudáfrica al quedarse con el tercer puesto del máximo torneo en fútbol.
