La selección de Grecia entendió muy bien lo que se estaba jugando en la Eurocopa y con gol solitario de su capitán Karagounis dejó en el camino sorpresivamente a la favorita Rusia en el Estadio Nacional de Varsovia, que después de su gran presentación en el certamen, se quedó con las ganas de seguir avanzando.
La victoria del cuadro helénico hizo que sumaran cuatro unidades en el Grupo A, los mismos que la rusa, ambos como mejor segundo lugar -luego de que República Checa llegara a seis puntos-, pero el criterio de desempate para pasar a la siguiente ronda fue su enfrentamiento directo, por lo que con el triunfo Grecia pasó a cuartos de final.
Los primeros 45 minutos fueron completamente del lado ruso, pero sus jugadores, como Zhirkov, Arshavin y Kezhakov, se cansaron de perdonar ante el marco de Sifakis, y esto al final terminó por jugar en su contra, pues en la llegada más clara del conjunto griego en tiempo de compensación logró ponerle número la pizarra.
Al minuto 45+2 (tiempo de compensación), el futbolista ruso Zhirkov erró en su salida y Giorgios Karagounis recuperó la esférica por la banda derecha, se metió hasta al área grande y sacó riflazo de derecha para vencer al portero Malafeev con tiro raso cruzado.
Para la parte complementaria, Rusia continuó encima de los griegos, pero sin ideas para poder abrir el candado enemigo, pero como calca de la primera mitad, fue Grecia el que estuvo más cerca de conseguir el segundo en una pelota parada, en la que Giorgios Tzavellas estrelló el balón en el palo izquierdo de Malafeev.
En los minutos finales, Rusia se quedó sin los argumentos futbolísticos para siquiera poder empatar el partido, por lo que los griegos se agazaparon bien en su zona baja y sentenciaron el marcador a su favor por la mínima diferencia.
