Varios proyectos latinos ganaron en el Festival de Cine de Cannes. El director mexicano Michel Franco recibió el premio al Mejor Largometraje dentro de la sección del festival denominada 'Una cierta mirada', por su película 'Después de Lucía'. El premio consiste en una ayuda a la difusión de la película en Francia.

Tim Roth, el actor de cintas como 'Pulp Fiction' y miembro del jurado, fue el encargado de dar el premio, y declaró: "La razón por la que vengo a Cannes y acepté ser jurado fue para descubrir películas extraordinarias como esta, que premiamos por sus grandes actuaciones, la técnica, el gran guión y su visión. Hemos descubierto una obra maestra".

'Después de Lucía' se trata de una adolescente que se muda a la Ciudad de México después de la muerte de su madre, y en su nueva escuela es víctima de "bullying".

Además, el cineasta mexicano Carlos Reygadas triunfó como Mejor Director, gracias a su cinta 'Post Tenebras Lux', convirtiéndose en el segundo mexicano en conseguir tal honor, después de que Alejandro González Iñárritu se lo llevara en 2006 por 'Babel'.

"Quiero agradecer al festival por creer en mi película, así como al jurado que la ha premiado con total libertad", dijo Reygadas al recibir su premio también de manos de Tim Roth.

Otro reconocimiento fue para el español Antonio Méndez Esparza, cuya cinta 'Aquí y Allá' obtuvo el gran premio al Mejor Largometraje en la Semana de la Crítica. Por su lado, dentro de la Quincena de Realizadores, el chileno Pablo Larraín ganó el premio Art Cinéma por su película 'No', protagonizada por Gael García Bernal.

Por otra parte, la Palma de Oro fue para el austriaco Michael Haneke por la película 'Amour', sobre una pareja de ancianos que afrontan la enfermedad de la esposa. Ya había ganado en 2009 también el máximo reconocimiento por la película 'The White Ribbon' y con ello, se convierte en uno de tan sólo siete directores en la historia en ganar en Cannes en dos ocasiones.

El segundo lugar fue para la sátira del director italiano Matteo Garrone, 'Reality' y el tercer lugar fue para la comedia de Ken Loach, 'The Angels Share'.

El premio a Mejor Actor fue para el danés Mads Mikkelsen por su trabajo en la cinta 'The Hunt' y el premio a Mejor Actriz fue un empate entre Cristina Flutur y Cosmina Stratan por la película 'Beyond the Hills'.
