MONTEVIDEO (AP) — El cineasta uruguayo Pablo Stoll se encuentra por tercera vez en su vida en Cannes, representando a un país que hace poco más de una década era considerado una presencia exótica en una muestra internacional de cine.

En una edición marcada por un gran número de películas latinoamericanas, la Quincena de Realizadores -un evento paralelo al prestigiado festival de la Riviera francesa, que arrancó el jueves- lo invitó a exhibir su nuevo largometraje, "3''. El filme, que se estrenó en Uruguay en abril, se presenta como "una comedia familiar", algo poco frecuente entre los títulos de la región que suelen verse en los festivales.

De hecho, la película combina dosis de humor e ironía con un trasfondo más dramático. "3'' cuenta la historia de Rodolfo (interpretado por Humberto de Vargas), un odontólogo de mediana edad que, desilusionado con su nueva vida, decide recuperar su lugar en la familia que dejó hace 10 años. Mientras tanto, su ex esposa Graciela (Sara Bessio) y la hija adolescente de ambos, Ana (Anaclara Ferreyra Palfy), atraviesan momentos difíciles en sus propias vidas.

"Para mí, la familia es una fuente inagotable de drama y comedia", explicó Stoll sobre su película, que la crítica no se anima a encasillar en una categoría. "Está toda esa historia de que el cine uruguayo es aburrido, y esta película para mí no lo es. Las comedias no son solamente las que cada 30 segundos te reís", dijo Stoll en una entrevista con The Associated Press.

Con este largometraje la Quincena de Realizadores, que transcurre hasta el 27 de mayo, suma este año seis títulos de la región, entre ellos "Fogo" (México-Canadá), de Yulene Olaizola, y "La sirga" (Colombia-Francia-México), de William Vega. Además, se exhibirá "La noche de enfrente", del director franco-chileno Raúl Ruiz, fallecido en 2011.

Chile estará representado también por "No", de Pablo Larraín, un filme sobre un publicista encargado de la campaña contra Augusto Pinochet en el referéndum de 1988. Y Argentina llegará con "Infancia clandestina", de Benjamín Ávila, sobre un niño que crece en el seno de una familia montonera y debe asumir una identidad falsa durante la dictadura.

Tanto en la Semana de la Crítica como en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Cannes, América Latina también tiene una presencia de peso: el mexicano Carlos Reygadas y el brasileño Walter Salles están en la contienda por el máximo honor del festival, la Palma de Oro; el primero con "Post Tenebras Lux", el segundo con la película estadounidense "On the Road", protagonizada por Viggo Mortensen.

"En dos o tres años podremos decir sí hay un renacimiento del cine latinoamericano, pero este año nos hemos encontrado con muchas películas muy buenas", dijo a The Associated Press Edouard Waintrop, director artístico de la Quincena de Realizadores.

Y en ese escenario, Waintrop destacó la singularidad de la película uruguaya.

Stoll prefirió estrenar "3'' en su país antes de llevarla a los festivales, un camino diferente al que eligió con filmes anteriores.

"Es una película sobre gente de clase media con problemas de gente de clase media -o media-alta- que viven en un apartamento y que no cazan para comer. Y que eso venga de Latinoamérica en algunos festivales no está bien visto", ironizó el director.

La trama de "3'' nació hace seis años, cuando Stoll aún trabajaba con el director uruguayo Juan Pablo Rebella. La dupla realizó dos largometrajes -"25 Watts" y "Whisky"- que marcaron la cinematografía local dentro y fuera del país.

Pero la colaboración culminó abruptamente con una tragedia: en 2006, a los 32 años, Rebella se suicidó.

A pesar de haber sido vecinos durante su infancia en Montevideo, los directores se conocieron a comienzos de los 90 en la Universidad Católica del Uruguay, donde estudiaban Comunicación Social.

"(En) la relación que teníamos con Juan tenía mucho que ver la cultura pop rock, las historietas, las series de televisión que nos gustaban, el humor absurdo tipo Monty Python", recordó Stoll.

La amistad estuvo marcada también un interés mutuo en el cine de Jim Jarmusch, Raúl Perrone y Aki Kaurismaki, entre otros cineastas.

La primera película que filmaron juntos -con 25.000 dólares y en blanco y negro- sigue a tres amigos que intentan sobrevivir un domingo de tedio en un típico barrio de Montevideo.

"25 Watts" se estrenó en 2001, ganó premios en varios festivales -incluyendo Buenos Aires, La Habana y Rotterdam- e inspiró a otros jóvenes realizadores que buscaban filmar historias en una plaza pequeña y sin industria cinematográfica.

"Acá no hay un una industria que te presione y un público que te presione, hacés lo que vos querés", dijo Stoll. "Yo hago la película que me gustaría ver y me gustaría que a todo el mundo le gustara".

Tres años después llegaría "Whisky", el filme que consagró a Stoll y Rebella como directores. La película cuenta la historia de Jacobo Köller, el dueño de una decadente fábrica de medias en Montevideo que inventa un matrimonio ficticio para impresionar a su carismático hermano que vive en Brasil.

Marcado por la melancolía y el humor absurdo, el filme retrata las vidas de tres personajes que esconden sus sentimientos detrás de la rutina de sus vidas solitarias.

"Whisky" se exhibió en la sección Un Certain Regard (Una Cierta Mirada) del Festival de Cannes en 2004, y regresó a casa con un premio de la Federación Internacional de Críticos de Cine (Stoll retornaría a la Costa Azul de Francia en 2008 para la presentación en la Quincena de Realizadores de la película "Acné", del uruguayo Federico Veiroj). Le siguieron un Goya en España a la mejor película extranjera de habla hispana, entre muchos otros galardones.

Luego de la muerte de Rebella, pasaron cinco años hasta que Stoll estrenó su primer largometraje en solitario, "Hiroshima", una película muda protagonizada por su hermano que también recorrió varios festivales.

Para Waintrop, las películas de Stoll y Rebella le pusieron "un nombre a un país que no es muy conocido alrededor del mundo". "Fui a Uruguay en el ochenta y algo, pero descubrí realmente la vida de los jóvenes con '25 Watts'. Ahora hay imágenes de Montevideo, de los suburbios. Las películas hicieron que el país apareciera en la imaginación".

Stoll considera que el mayor logro de sus primeros largometrajes es que pudieron estrenarse comercialmente fuera de su país, una de las principales barreras a las que se enfrenta el cine latinoamericano.

"La distribución de cine internacional está copada por determinado tipo de películas, una distribución que nosotros no manejamos y unas películas que no hacemos, ni sabemos hacer, ni podemos hacer", reflexionó Ronald Melzer, crítico, productor y distribuidor de películas uruguayas, editor de todos los títulos de Stoll y Rebella en DVD. "A Uruguay le ha ido bastante bien por su figuración en festivales; Brasil, que hace 100 películas por año o más, tiene dos o tres o cuatro que de tanto en tanto entran", agregó.

Coproducida con Argentina, España y Alemania, "Whisky" se proyectó en salas de varias ciudades de América y Europa.

"Es posiblemente la película uruguaya que se ha estrenado en más países", dijo Melzer.

También fruto de una coproducción, "3'' ya tiene asegurado un estreno en Argentina y Alemania, y seguramente lo tenga también en Francia, según Stoll.

Actualmente, el director trabaja en un nuevo proyecto, "una película de zombies" que llevaría en su maleta a Cannes para mostrarle al mundo lo que el cine de la región tiene para ofrecer.
