Carroll Shelby, el legendario piloto y diseñador de automóviles estadounidense que creó el famoso deportivo Cobra, falleció a los 89 años en un hospital de Dallas, informó hoy su empresa Carroll Shelby International.
El piloto y diseñador de autos deportivos, Carroll Shelby (11 de enero de 1923 - 11 de mayo de 2012) y quien se encargara de construir el mítico Shelby Cobra, así como darle fuerza al famoso auto exótico Ford Mustang, falleció este viernes a la edad de 89 años de edad.
La noticia fue difundida la tarde del viernes por la empresa de Shelby, Carroll Shelby International, mediante un comunicado (retomado del sitio en inglés Autoblog.com) donde informaron que murió en un hospital de Dallas, Texas, su tierra natal, sin especificar la causa exacta.
Este creador de la industria automotriz primero fue aviador durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Diversos problemas de salud lo llevaron a recibir dos trasplantes, de corazón y de riñón, en la década de los noventa.
Después de la guerra se dedicó a la cría de pollos y cuando el negocio quebró comenzó a participar en carreras de automóviles, convirtiéndose en una estrella del circuito durante la década de 1950, con victorias en Estados Unidos y en Le Mans (Francia).
Una afección cardiaca lo llevó a abandonar su carrera deportiva y entonces se volcó en el diseño de su gran pasión, los autos.
Su mejor creación fue el deportivo Cobra, presentado en el Salón del Automóvil de Nueva York en 1962.
En 2007 un modelo de Cobra hecho en 1966 y que perteneció a Shelby se vendió en una subasta por 5,5 millones de dólares, según informó la agencia informativa española EFE, un récord para un automóvil estadounidense.
Carroll fue honrado en 1992 con su introducción al Salón de la Fama del Automóvil.
