SAN DIEGO (AP) — Junior Seau se suicidó, informó el jueves la oficina del médico forense del condado de San Diego.


La autopsia confirmó que el ex linebacker de los Chargers de San Diego murió de un balazo en el pecho, dijo la oficina forense, y agregó que se revelarán más detalles en un informe final de investigación que podría llevar hasta 90 días en estar listo.


Las autoridades indicaron estar aguardando una decisión de la familia sobre si entregará el cerebro de Seau a investigadores externos no identificados para que lo estudien.


Seau murió el miércoles en su casa en Oceanside.


El jefe de policía Frank McCoy dijo que la novia de Seau reportó haberlo encontrado inconsciente con una herida de bala en el pecho y que los esfuerzos por salvarle la vida fueron infructuosos. Se encontró una pistola cerca de él, indicó McCoy.


La policía señaló que no se halló nota suicida y que no sabían de inmediato a nombre de quién estaba registrada el arma.


La ex esposa de Seau, Gina, dijo a The Associated Press el miércoles que Seau sufrió conmociones cerebrales durante su carrera de 20 años, pero que ella desconocía si los efectos de éstas contribuyeron a la muerte del jugador. Seau vistió el uniforme de los Chargers durante 13 años antes de jugar con los Dolphins de Miami y los Patriots de Nueva Inglaterra.


La muerte de Seau sigue al suicidio el año pasado de Dave Duerson, ex integrante de los Bears de Chicago, que también se disparó un balazo en el pecho.


La familia de Duerson ha interpuesto una demanda de muerte por negligencia contra la NFL, bajo el argumento de que la liga no hizo lo suficiente para impedir o tratar las conmociones cerebrales que dañaron gravemente el cerebro de Duerson antes de que muriera en febrero de 2011.
